Myspace.com a place for Friends or is it ???

By Tempestt Storm on June 14,2006

It depends on what perspective you’re looking at, if you’re watching the news and hear about Myspace.com you might think it’s a place for creeps to prowl for little kids online. If you have a page yourself you might think that it’s pretty cool. Myspace.com is a two year company with millions of members ranging from everyday people to celebrities. Myspace.com lets you keep up with old or new friends, network and date.

So why is Myspace getting a lot of bad hype. Predators have been contacting teenagers, trying to hook-up with the young and innocent, and who is to blame for this. Well of course the media turns to Myspace. Is it myspace fault or a lack of parenting? When you’re young you think no one can harm you and that it’s a must, to have a boyfriend or girlfriend. With that mindset it’s easy for young teens to get pulled in by predators. Myspace.com gets an average of 250,000 new members daily. So it’s impossible for them to screen and check every member. They do have people policing the site 24 hours a day looking for inappropriate material. But it’s up to the teenagers and parents to be responsible.

               Here’s MY ADVICE to Teenagers:

·        Think of those people as your online friends ONLY; meaning they don’t need your address or phone number. Having the name to your myspace page and maybe your instant message is enough.

·        Also there is no reason for you to post every bit of history and fact about yourself on your page…that’s how predators find out about you.

·        If you decide to talk to someone new outside of myspace…then DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR NUMBER EPECIALLY A HOUSE NUMBER, ask for theirs first and let them know you will be calling them PRIVATE.  This should be after ya’ll have sent a thousand and one messages over the internet. But be careful cuss talking to someone over the internet is different then talking on the phone because it’s more personal.

·        Always keep in mind what you read on someone’s page might not be true, the age, picture and about me section could be totally false.

·        And Never, NEVER meet up with someone.

Besides the predators, Bosses are now checking to see if future interns and workers have a myspace page…though what you do outside of work should be your business; it does reflect what type of person you are. That’s why I suggest either keeping your page professional or setting your profile to PRIVATE. Remember all it takes is an email or name to find someone on myspace.

As for people whose networking, remember everyone is not a CEO or have connections to get you in the business you want to be in. Some people are LIARS!!!!!!!!

If you decide to network here’s MY ADVICE:

      ·        If it’s a company ask for a website and check it out.

·        If it’s a person who claims they have connections ask for names and phone numbers, websites and companies.

·        I think common sense will let you know if something is legit…Also read their page very carefully, if they have one friend and claim to know people then they don’t.

·        Check out their friend list and comments people have wrote to them, which will tell you a lot about them as well.

Lastly be SMART AND CAREFUL and remember just because myspace says it’s a place for friends don’t mean it is.
