BEHIND IN THE TIMES
Ok...Ok, I understand that Mainstream Radio allows listeners the comfort and convenience of free radio...but is free actually better? Can you actually control what you listen to on the radio? Lets take a look at some of the actual facts and compare, then decide for yourself.
-
Mainstream: The negatives were addressed in my first article, on a positive note... it is very accessible, convenient and free. As technology changes mainstream radio compares to an 8 track tape deck. Not alot of options. Forcast...dimenishing numbers. Indie artists and "B" artists rarely get played.
-
Internet Radio: In December of 2005, 7million listeners between the ages of 18-34, between the hours of 10-3pm. Boasts 40% or 20,000 regular listeners on average. You access it by internet, which may cause an expense, but is available 24/7. You choose what genre or format you want to listen to.Worldwide capabilities, the ability to save and listen later. Can be downloaded to MP3 for car usage. Will have sponsors or adds, but on average probably only 1-2 an hour. Host of different formats, indies are available and you can replay songs. Major carriers are AOL, Yahoo and Launchcast, but anyone can own and operate an independent station. Forcast...a growing market.
-
Satellite Radio: 100% Commercial free boasts the 2 largest carriers...XM and Sirrus. Listeners can also listen to their favorite local station, more autos are offering this service as an option or you can purchase a portable device ranging from $59.95-$269.00, and guess what...you can purchase it from Staples Office Supply. Forcast...cost involved for equipment, but hours on hours of listening to the genre of choice, thats control.
It is a fact that most listeners want less commercials and more music, the music genre that they prefer and when they want to hear it. All of the three choices have some benefit but ask yourself this...are you behind in the times? Please comment and tell me what you are listening to...there is a method to the madness.
