Mainstream -vs- Internet Radio

By Diana Townsel on August 28,2006

Sign of the Times...

Topic, Internet radio, how does it compare to Mainstream radio? I conducted a survey of internet radio and mainstream radio stations... here were some of the not-so-surprising results:

Mainstream radio:

  1. Mainstream radio stations play the same songs every hour.
  2. Mainstream radio does not play Indie or "B" side artists.
  3. Mainstream radio stations play too many commercials.
  4. Too many stations carrying the same formats from city to city.
  5. I requested a song and they never played it.

It is clear that more and more listeners are turning to internet radio, there is a sense of individuality, less commercials, more variety and unusual formatting. Internet radio stations can be broadcast without all of the regulations and can be aired on a greater or to a more broader listening audience. If more listeners begin to turn off their radios, how will this effect mainstream radio stations? You as the listener have a choice. You decide what you will and will not listen to.

So how does internet radio compare to satellite radio...stay tuned, send me your comments and lets discuss it.

  • image Thank you for your comments. I could understand that mainstream radio is readily available after work while driving home, but isnt internet radio available as well...satellite radio as well?? You may have to spend a little bit more out of pocket to hear what you like but if your gonna be intraffic....wouldnt you want to be listening to what you like?

  • image Internet radio is fantastic, i listen to what I want! Not what some suit in New York, Los Angeles or Nashville or some Broadcasting Company has decided!

  • image I thought the article was interesting; however, mainstream radio is the place to be after work, driving home in your vehicle. Internet radio is great for when you get home, relax, and then, you can choose the songs you want to listen for your own pleasure & needs.
